Infographics are enjoying something of a renaissance.
It’s easy to see why. With more channels available and the potential for information overload, making your data standout has never been more challenging.
And that’s what Infographics can do.
In simple terms, we take information and represent it graphically, in a way that makes people want to study and read it. (Information graphically = infographic).
Making people pay attention for as long as needed is always the goal of the best communicators. Infographics are an excellent tool to do this. Making your data beautiful is what encourages those who like visual information to pay more attention.
Infographics can be especially effective when:
You have lots of information to convey (like times, costs, volumes, scale, share)
You have a complex process or complex thinking to be explained
You have raw data that needs to be contextualised
You have a summary of other activities to represent.
Overall, there is no limit to when and where an infographic might be relevant. They can work across all media – although it’s worth remembering that if people are accessing via mobile device, size matters!
To consider how to brief in an infographic, think about your core communications goals first – who, what and why you’re communicating – since this will inform decisions about content, layout and how the data is represented (and in what kind of hierarchy).
When our design team are planning infographics, they follow broadly these questions:
What are the key things we want the audience to take away?
How shall we organise the information as a result of those take-aways?
How can we represent as much of the text graphically as possible, so that we minimise text and maximise the visual impact?
Infographics are also a fantastic way to reinforce your brand recognition, using your colour palette, fonts and icons (where you have them) in new and exciting ways to deliver your messaging.
